This week in Christian history: Aimee Semple McPherson born, Criswell College, Chalcedon Council
Criswell College founding approved — October 7, 1970
This week marks the anniversary of when Criswell College, an evangelical Christian college, was approved for creation by First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas.
The Christian academic institution was championed by Pastor W. A. Criswell, the clergyman who served as the leader of FBC Dallas for nearly 50 years.
“Classes began on January 12, 1971, with two certificate programs consisting of twelve semester hours of study in theology and the Old and New Testaments,” explained the college.
“On the first night, 329 students enrolled. For the next two years the institute operated as a night school, providing working lay people with an education previously unavailable to them at a convenient time.”
