Trump unveiled Pete Hegseth, a veteran of the Armed Forces and co-host of the cable news program “Fox & Friends Weekend” as his choice to serve as secretary of defense in a Nov. 12 announcement. Hegseth has never served in public office before but Trump is confident he will do a good job nonetheless: “With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice — Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down.”

“Nobody fights harder for the Troops, and Pete will be a courageous and patriotic champion of our ‘Peace Through Strength’ policy,” Trump added. In an interview earlier this month, Hegseth declared, “I’m straight up just saying that we should not have women in combat roles.”

“It hasn’t made us more effective, hasn’t made us more lethal, has made fighting more complicated,” he added. “We’ve all served with women, and they’re great. Our institutions don’t have to incentivize that in places where traditionally — not traditionally, over human history — men in those positions are more capable.”
