100,000 Christians Are Killed Around the Globe Each Year, Says Holy See Official

Monsieur Silvano Maria Tomassi, Permanent Observer of the Holy See in the United Nations, said that approximately 100,000 Christians are killed annually due to their religious faith.

"Christians face serious tragedies, including eviction from their houses by force, forcing them to bear the destruction of their worship places, rape, the kidnapping of their leaders, such as what happened with the two Syrian metropolitans who were kidnapped from Aleppo," Tomassi said during the 23rd round of the Interactive Dialogue between the Human Rights Council and the High Commission.

He added that the Middle East, Africa and Asia are the regions that witness the most violations against religious freedoms and blamed sectarian incitement, fanaticism and terrorism.

The secretary of the Papal Council for Justice and Peace, Mario Tosu, said in a speech in front of the expanding assembly of the EU Organizations for Security and Cooperation that the discrimination exercised against Christians has increased in this region despite the conferences held by the European organization.

In a statement broadcasted over Vatican Radio, he added, "The discrimination against Christians should be confronted like anti-Semitism and the hatred of Islam."

It was also recently revealed that the Egyptian does not announce the real census of Copts in Egypt deliberately to prevent them from demanding their share in leading positions, such as governors, ministers, university presidents and heads of districts among others, Ikram Labib, member of the Supreme Central Committee of the Egyptian opposition Tagammu Party, told Mideast Christian News.

"Under the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood, Copts live in a dark age in which they suffer from unjustified obvious persecution. The Brotherhood accuses Copts of disbelief and we do not expect them to retreat or be impartial in dealing with Copts," Labib told MCN.
