Trump claims his 'only crime' was defending US 'from those who seek to destroy it'

Trump began his speech by proclaiming his innocence of the charges.

"The only crime that I have committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it," he said.

The 76-year-old insisted that there has been an effort by Democrats to destroy him since the days of the 2016 election.

"From the beginning, the Democrats spied on my campaign, remember that? They attacked me with an onslaught of fraudulent investigations. Russia, Russia, Russia. Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine. Impeachment hoax No. 1, impeachment hoax No. 2, the illegal and unconstitutional raid on Mar-a-Lago right here."

He also accused the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice of "relentlessly pursuing Republicans." Toward the end of his remarks, he claimed, "they can't beat us at the ballot box, so they try and beat us through the law."
