NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and wife dance in empty Times Square

In an empty Times Square during the 2020-2021 New Year’s Eve celebration, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted a video of himself and his wife, both in masks, dancing on stage.

“Happy #NewYear from the greatest city in the world,” the tweet reads.

The post came when other New Yorkers were encouraged to stay home and socially distant on New Year’s Eve. Additionally, the blocks surrounding the ball drop were blocked off to prevent crowd gatherings.

“The View” co-host Meghan McCain tweeted that shutting down New York City to have a “private party in Times Square is really *chefs kiss* the most tone deaf thing I may have ever seen a mayor do.”

“Everyone hates you DeBlasio,” McCain asserted.

DeBlasio’s tweet received much heat in the comment section from angry New Yorkers and non-New Yorkers alike. The mayor was accused of “mocking the citizens of New York.”

This year’s New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square was virtually empty as the annual tradition was broadcast and did not include the gathering of thousands for the historic occasion.
