Vowed to secure border, ensure pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants
Harris discussed immigration, as the Biden administration's approval ratings on the issue have been well underwater as illegal border crossings reached record highs during the term in office. Republicans often point to Biden appointing Harris to lead the response to the influx in immigration.
She cast the blame on Trump, who bills himself as a champion for border security, for killing the bipartisan immigration reform bill considered in Congress this year.
Harris said she and Biden "brought together Democrats and conservative Republicans to write the strongest border bill in decades," adding that "the Border Patrol endorsed it." She slammed Trump for asking members of Congress to "kill the deal."
"I refuse to play politics with our security, and here's my pledge to you. As president, I will bring back the bipartisan border security bill that he killed, and I will sign it into law."
Harris expressed confidence that "we can live up to our proud heritage as a nation of immigrants and reform our broken immigration system," adding, "We can create an earned pathway to citizenship and secure our border."
