5 things to know about 2024 presidential candidate Ron DeSantis
He went to Catholic grade school and wants to raise his kids in a 'Christ-centered household'
During an interview with CBN News earlier this year, host David Brody asked DeSantis to describe his time attending Catholic grade school.
"By and large, I liked it. But again, I think the things I didn't like about it were because they were doing the right thing by making sure that we were disciplined," he said.
"You would pray every day," he recalled.
He credited the Catholic school environment, specifically daily religious education classes, with making him "better as a result." Noting that "some of the nuns were very strict about what your obligations were," he suggested that he did not always appreciate that as "a young kid" while looking back favorably on his time in Catholic school as a "good experience."
When asked to elaborate on his Catholic faith, DeSantis spoke of his efforts to raise his three children in a "Christ-centered household." As many conservatives are concerned about the prospects of progressive ideology being infused in many American public schools, he commented, "In this day and age, you don't know what your kids are getting served up" in school.
DeSantis expressed gratitude that his school-age children, currently in pre-school and kindergarten, come home "talking about David and Goliath" and other religious topics.
DeSantis also noted that his children "got to go see where King David was" when they accompanied him on a trip to Israel earlier this year, citing the trip as an opportunity to apply the knowledge they have learned at school.
DeSantis looked back favorably on this past Christmas, explaining that his 4-year-old son wanted "a sling to be like David slaying Goliath."
"That really, I think, warms our hearts when we see that, so that's the upbringing that we're trying to do," DeSantis said.
