Abortion Supporters Rally Against Apple for Siri’s Pro-Life Actions

A Pro-choice organization named NARAL is one of the major voices supporting a new petition that rails against Apple for its Siri system directing women looking for abortion clinics to pro-life establishments such as Crisis Pregnancy Centers.

The petition goes as far as calling Apple an anti-choice extremist organization.

NARAL is demanding that Apple takes action and corrects this problem with its Siri system on the iPhone 4S.

“Siri responded to a question concerning where to find abortion providers by directing an individual to anti-choice organizations known as ‘Crisis Pregnancy Centers,’” said NARAL in a recent statement. “Anti-choice groups created CPCs to look like comprehensive health clinics, but many do not provide women with accurate pregnancy-related information.”

This petition was issued directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook and currently has 20,000 backers.

However, technology website 9to5Mac feels that search engines misguiding users is an unavoidable glitch in the technology world.

“But is Apple really at fault here?” asked the website. “Just like when Google’s search algorithm pulls up manipulated results (like Santorum), Apple and its location partners like Yelp are pulling up manipulated results.”

Apple still plans to correct the issue and it made a statement to The New York Times regarding the matter.

“Our customers want to use Siri to find out all types of information, and while it can find a lot, it doesn’t always find what you want,” said Natalie Kerris, a spokesperson for Apple. “These are not intentional omissions meant to offend anyone. It simply means that as we bring Siri from beta to final product, we find places where we can do better, and we will in the coming weeks.”
