'Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Season 3 News, Spoilers: Showrunner On Surprising Exits, Spin-off; How 'Civil War' Will Affect Series
In Tuesday's episode, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." bid two of its veteran agents goodbye with an emotional send-off.
The episode, titled "Parting Shot," saw Bobbi Morse (Adrianne Palicki) and Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) being disavowed from the fictional spy agency following their involvement in the deaths of three top-ranking officials of the Russian government.
Fortunately, the pair's surprising and heart-wrenching exit in "Parting Shot" won't be the last fans will see of the two. Morse and her ex-husband Hunter, a former mercenary, will be the main focus of a new spin-off series titled "Marvel's Most Wanted."
The spin-off, which received a pilot order in August 2015, will follow the pair as they continue on their adventures. Morse and Hunter will be on the run, with a bounty on their heads. The two will form a reluctant alliance with Dominic Fortune (to be played by Delroy Lindo), who agrees to help the ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." executive producer and showrunner Jeff Bell spoke about why they had to write off Morse and Hunter and whether or not the former agents can someday rejoin the rest of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team.
"We wanted to manufacture a meaningful exit," the "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." boss said. According to Bell, Palicki and Blood had to take time off to shoot the pilot for "Marvel's Most Wanted." As filming for the pilot would take a lot of time, they decided to just cut the pair from "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." instead of having to come up with a reason for why they were absent for several episodes.
"Part of what we're hoping to do with Bobbi and Hunter in the new show is to stake out some new territory and not make it a S.H.I.E.L.D. show," Bell said about the decision to definitely remove the two from S.H.I.E.L.D.
"Marvel's Most Wanted" is "a show about these two characters living their life and the adventures that they have together," he said.
Meanwhile, Bell's co-executive producer Jed Whedon recently confirmed that the upcoming Marvel superhero clash film "Captain America: Civil War" will affect "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and that the ABC series will have to alter some elements of its storyline to coincide with what happens in the film.
"It will definitely have a ripple effect," Whedon told The Hollywood Reporter. "It is one world, so if there is a giant event, it will definitely have a ripple effect on our world."
"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
