'Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Spoilers: Clark Gregg Says Show 'Will Get Darker'

"Coulson is not the director right now, he's just a man," actor Clark Gregg, who plays Agent Coulson on ABC's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." (and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films), said about his character's actions in last week's episode, "Closure."

Last Tuesday's dramatic episode saw the demise of Rosalind Price (Constant Zimmer), the ATCU leader who also happened to be Coulson's new girlfriend. Price was killed by Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) to keep the fact that the ATCU (Advanced Threat Containment Unit) works for Hydra a secret from the world. This leads Coulson to relinquish his S.H.I.E.L.D. duties to Mack (Henry Simmons) and go after Ward.

"It's so big and intense and emotional with the loss that happened and the build in the sense that, it's as big as it is and it only leads to the midseason finale next week which is even bigger," the 53-year-old actor said about "Closure" and the next episode, "Maveth."

Gregg revealed what's next for his character, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "It's going to get worse before it gets better." He went on to say: "It will get darker. What has been unleashed by the events of tonight's episode is not something that is going to be resolved quickly or easily." Gregg added that the mad and determined version of the normally calm Agent Coulson will be there for quite some time.

The actor also disclosed what's in store for audiences in next week's midseason finale, revealing that most of the action in the next episode will be happening in the alien planet where his character has landed. The creature known as "it" is also on the planet, as is Ward, and that what occurs there might be more than Coulson and Agent Leo Fitz (Iain de Caestecker) can handle.

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.
