Aimee Copeland Requesting Painkillers as Surgeries Take Their Toll

Aimee Copeland's life-changing ordeal and physical trauma is finally beginning to take its toll on the 24-year-old. Though she had previously sworn off painkillers such as morphine because taking them would make her feel like "a traitor to her convictions," the flesh-eating-virus survivor is now requesting medication for her pain.

"Donna and I have just come from seeing Aimee this morning, and I can report that over the past 48 hours, Aimee has had the most difficult pain she's experienced throughout her entire ordeal," her father Andy wrote in his latest blog post on Aimee's experience.

"The surgery Aimee had on Friday is far more severe than any dressing change imaginable," he explained. "Aimee is now taking pain medication in as liberal a dose as can be prescribed. If she even dared to refuse taking it, which she wouldn't, then the doctors would most certainly administer it in an IV drip. Even so, the allowable doses of Morphine, Fentanyl and Lyrica are often inadequate to deal with the pain."

Aimee has had both hands removed, as well as one of her legs, and one of her feet, after contracting a flesh-eating virus that almost took her life. Throughout the ordeal, she has remained upbeat and decided to use meditation to control her pain. Now, though, she is entering the next stage of recovery, which includes several painful, intense, surgeries.

"During the most recent skin graft, her surgeons were forced to take muscle from Aimee's abdomen to create a flap over the iliac artery in her groin," Andy wrote. "She occasionally cries from the pain, but she stops because crying hurts her stomach."

Even through all of that, Andy noted, she was still able to wish him a happy Father's Day yesterday.

"Amazing, although she is suffering immensely, Aimee's presence of mind is sharp. I wanted to hug her, but to even touch her sends a shockwave of pain through her body," he noted.

One piece of advice that Andy wanted to share with fathers on their special day was this: "Most of all, lead your family along a Godly path so that they will be able to find their way back to the path when they stray."
