Alleged Visine Poisoning: Man Contaminates Girlfriend's Drink After Fight, Arrested

A 27-year-old mechanic has been arrested in California after attempting to poison his girlfriend with Visine drops.

The "Visine prank" is commonly known to cause diarrhea, which is what Shayne Carpenter claimed he was trying to do after slipping the drops into his girlfriend's drink following a disagreement.

"He was making texts to his buddies that if 'She's going to be talking crap then she's going to be crapping,'" Lt. Steve Tripp of the Nevada County Sheriff Department told ABC News.

Carpenter later admitted to the incident on the phone while speaking with police. Carpenter's girlfriend contacted officials after she saw the text messages and began to feel sick.

The problem with the "Visine prank" is that it is less likely to cause diarrhea and can have extremely adverse side effects that could eventually lead to a coma. Those who ingest Visine can suffer nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, tremors, and seizures.

Carpenter's girlfriend, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital and treated. She has now been released. Carpenter was arrested and released from jail Friday after posting a $25,000 bail.

The mechanic is not the first one to resort to Visine poisoning. Vickie Jo Mills of McConnellsburg, Penn., was arrested last year after poisoning her boyfriend with Visine over a 3-year period. Reports suggested that it was a "desperate plea for attention."

Mill's boyfriend uncovered the plot after undergoing a blood test with his doctor, who concluded that there was a "very high level" of tetrahydrozoline in his system, according to Daily Mail. Mills was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment. Her bail was set at $75,000.
