Angelina Jolie as Maleficent: First Look

Disney has released the very first image of Angelina Jolie in character as Maleficent in the upcoming version of "Sleeping Beauty."

The 37-year-old actress appears pale-skinned with blood-red lipstick and yellow eyes. Her face upturned as she dons horns on her head.

Maleficent, the villain in "Sleeping Beauty," is the self-proclaimed "Mistress of All Evil." Jolie portrays the dark character who curses the infant Princess Aurora in the film, played by Elle Fanning.

On playing one of Disney's most powerful characters in the reincarnation of the 1959 animated classic, Jolie expressed her hopes for the role earlier this year.

"I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn't mean she can't have other [warmer] qualities," said the actress, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Maleficent is Disney's half-dragon adaptation of the fairy godmother from the original fairy tale, "The Sleeping Beauty" by Charles Perrault.

"It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that's good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you're saying they should be a villain," Jolie explained. "But she is actually a great person. She's not perfect, she's far from perfect."

"Maleficent," which is scheduled for release in 2014, plans to offer fans a new perspective on the beloved story.

Although filmmakers behind "Maleficent" are toying with ideas, one thing about her character will remain.

"We're experimenting with different things," said Jolie. "But the horns are the horns- you can't deny them. You have to have horns."

"I've already got my horns fitted," the actress added. "My kids are very happy."

Jolie shares six children with fiancé and actor Brad Pitt. The role will be her first since making her directorial debut with "In the Land of Blood and Honey."

"Maleficent" will also see Juno Temple and Brenton Thwaites.
