Atlus Releases Free Sidescrolling 'Shin Megami Tensei' Game

Japanese publisher Atlus has released a new retro-style game post-apocalyptic role-playing series "Shin Megami Tensei." The game is now available for PC and the best part is that it's absolutely free.

The publisher announced the game via its Japanese blog following a trailer last week for the 3DS game "Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux." Titled "Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue" the side-scrolling game was initially called a fake by the trailer but was later revealed to be real, at least for a limited time.

The game is currently available as a free download for PC and will be downloadable until Dec. 24. It stars Jack Frost and Jack O'Lantern as playable characters as they to navigate areas inspired by "Strange Journey" using the powers of fire and ice.

However, it seems that Atlus has no plans to release the game on other platforms which means it will only be available for PC players. On top that, the game is also available only in Japanese so unless gamers have studied a bit of the language, playing "Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue" will likely prove to be quite challenging.

As for "Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux," the game will be an updated port of the original "Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey" released 2009. The game is the fourth entry in the series and a special task force sent by the United Nations to investigate the Schwarzwelt, a spatial distortion that appears in Antarctica and threatens to engulf the world. The game is set to be released in Japan next week with the North American release slated in early 2018.

The game was developed as part of the 25th anniversary of the series and it was developed along with the HD Project "Shin Megami Tensei" game shown on the Nintendo Switch conference last year. Unlike the previous games, however, "Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux" will not feature English voice acting.
