'Avatar 2' Christmas 2017 Release Postponed?

"Avatar 2" may not be released on the previously thought Christmas 2017 window because James Cameron might need more time to make the film.

Although 20th Century Fox has never confirmed the Christmas 2017 release for "Avatar 2," James Cameron said last month that they were looking to schedule the premiere during the holiday. Right now, there is no official word on the probable screening date for the sequel, according to Slash Film.

Cameron's film was recently rumored to be slated for a direct battle with "Star Wars: Episode VII." The latter's release date was moved to Dec. 15, 2017 from its original schedule of May 26, 2017, Enstars reports. But after news of the postponed release of "Avatar 2" came out, the two movies might not face off with each other anymore.

The delay in the release of "Avatar 2" does not come as a big surprise, considering that the movie has been the subject of rumors every year since 2014. When Cameron revealed the original Christmas 2017 target, he mentioned that the date was not that important compared to finishing all three films. He also said the three sequels will be shown a year apart, the report relays.

While most details on "Avatar 2" are being kept strictly under wraps, what is known is that Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington will return to reprise their roles as the lead characters, and Sigourney Weaver could also come back to the project. The movie will also make use of underwater performance capture technology.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly (EW), Cameron said bringing back "Avatar" is a challenging task. He said he is aware that people have high expectations for the upcoming sequel, the report details.

"Because you have to challenge yourself. Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn't just some big fluke the first time," Cameron told EW. "So we've got to deliver. I've created a nice rod for my own back, so they say."

More details on "Avatar 2" are expected to be revealed in the near future.
