Get ready to throw a praise party with BETs sixth Celebration of Gospel (COG) program, airing tonight at 9 p.m. EST/PST.
Recorded at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, this years show includes performances from gospel greats such as Pastor Shirley Caesar, Mary Mary, Kirk Franklin and Donnie McClurkin as well as show-stopping appearances from a host of well known R&B acts. The program also featured a surprise tribute to Dr. Bobby Jones, who was honored for his work on Bobby Jones Gospel, which debuted in 1989 and is the first and only nationally syndicated black gospel television show.
This year was one of the best, longtime COG host and comedian Steve Harvey told BET. Stevie Wonder performed, Tyrese performed, Anthony Hamilton performed, Kelly Price performed people we dont normally see in the gospel setting. The majority of these people started in the church so they should be welcomed when they come back.
We live this music, said Tina Atkins of gospel sister duo Mary Mary. Its not just something to do to entertain folks; we love it. We believe in it and its just fun to be able to do this show. We look forward to it every year.
