Beyonce Pregnant: VMA 2011 Announcement Breaks Tweeting Record

R&B singer Beyonce announced her pregnancy during her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday. Excited fans took to Twitter and gave the social networking website a record breaking boost in tweets.

"Tonight I want you to stand up on your feet, I want you to feel the love that's growing inside of me," Beyonce said during the introduction of her VMA performance.

After performing "Love on Top," a song from her latest album, "4," Beyonce unbuttoned her sparkly fuchsia tuxedo jacket to reveal a baby bump, which she rubbed while over come with smiles and giggles.

Fans immediately began tweeting their reactions to the announcement, making “Beyonce is Pregnant” a trending topic on Twitter.

@twitterglobalpr, tweeted on Monday that Beyonce's big news had given the site a significant bump in tweets per second.

"Last night at 10:35pm ET, Beyonce's big MTV #VMA moment gave Twitter a record bump: 8,868 Tweets per second."

Beyonce's pregnancy has essentially overshadowed all the most significant recent events, according to the social media website, including the Virginia earthquake, the death of Osama Bin Laden and the Royal Wedding.

The previous record holder was the women's [soccer] World Cup final in July, where Japan beat the United States and garnered Twitter 7,196 tweets per second, according to Time.com.

Another significant tweeting record came during New Years Eve 2010 in Japan, which gave Twitter a peak of 6,939 tweets per second, The Atlantic Wire noted.

The day of the Japanese earthquake and Tsunami in March gave Twitter a peak of 5,530 tweets per second.

The Virginia earthquake topped at 5,500 tweets per second and Osama Bin Laden accumulated 5,106 tweets per second at its highest.

Super Bowl XLV bumped Twitter to 4,064 tweets per second and the Royal Wedding in England in April peaked on Twitter at 3,966 tweets per second.
