Beyoncé Pregnant: Baby Bump Reveal at VMA Breaks Twitter Record

"Beyoncé is pregnant!" were among the tweets that helped launched the popular singer into the Twitter hall of fame for most-tweeted-topic per second.

Beyoncé's pregnancy reveal during her MTV VMA appearance Sunday sent the Twitter world into a frenzy with more people tweeting about the baby news per second than the Japanese tsunami or Osama bin Laden's death.

After performing "Love on Top" on the Nokia Theater stage in Los Angeles, Beyoncé unbuttoned her purple-sequined blazer and proudly rubbed her baby bump.

Before the show, Beyoncé walked down the VMA black carpet and announced that she is expecting her first child with rapper Jay-Z. She then posed for photographers, cradling her baby bump seen under a flowy orange gown.

Beyoncé's pregnancy announcement became the hottest topic on Twitter, breaking a record 8,868 tweets per second.

So what most-tweeted-topic did the baby news dethrone?

The prior Twitter record for the most tweets per second for a single event was set at 7,196 tweets per second during the 2011 Women's World Cup finals, in which the U.S. women's soccer team lost to Japan in a last-minute penalty kick.

As for the VMA show itself, the pre-show and main show brought in 10 million tweets. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards pulled in 12, 4 million viewers Sunday, becoming the most-watched broadcast in MTV history.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z married in 2008. The couple has not revealed when their baby is due but a source told US Weekly that the pregnant singer is four months along.
