Beyonce's Risque Outfit Designers Reveal Costume Inspiration

Beyonce Knowles shocked fans when she appeared to be topless with a risque gold bodysuit during the opening of her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour recently, and now the outfit designers are opening up about the singer's choice to wear it.

Knowles, the 31-year-old wife of rap mogul Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, collaborated closely with outfit designers Phillipe and David Blond to create the controversial look that exposed fake breasts and took 600 hours to make.

"To start, Phillipe hand painted the suit on Beyonce to achieve the correct shading. The piece was then hand embroidered with approximately 30,000 Swarovski crystals that took over 600 hours to apply," David Blond told Fashionista.com. "It was a close collaboration with Beyonce, Tina Knowles and her stylist, Ty Hunter, to finish what would become one of the most glamorous and provocative looks she's ever worn."

The designers told Fashionista that Knowles was the first celebrity to wear their designs and spoke about being inspired by her mother and designer Tina Knowles. The singer's personality and the work of artist Tamara de Lempicka served as the inspiration for the outfit that left many fans and members of the media shocked.

"Beyonce exudes confidence, glamour and sensuality, so, we created something that would express all of those things in every way. Our original inspiration came from Tamara de Lempicka's paintings of the female body," The Blonds told Fashionista.com. "It is also meant to give the illusion of being covered in crystallized honey. It's a couture look that would not only be stunning, but, also reflect her personality and the music from this segment of the Mrs. Carter Tour."

However, some people did not hesitate to express their shock after catching wind of Knowles' outfit that she wore at the Kombank Arena in Belgade, Serbia for the first day of her tour.

"Thin line btwn creativity & trying too hard," one person tweeted.

Another person was offended by Knowles' outfit choice since the singer also serves as a mother to 1-year-old Blue Ivy Carter.

"Guess Beyonce wants to be as disgusting as Madonna and a real role model for her daughter," the person tweeted. "Can't respect her."

Still, The Blonds did not seem to mind the backlash and praised the singer as a performer.

"When it comes to Beyonce– she is everything! She's the ultimate performer and it's electrifying to experience her live in concert because she connects with the audience in a way that's pure," the designers told Fashionista.com. "Like a mix of Diana Ross's glamour and Tina Turner's passion."
