Black Bishop Encourages Christians to Leave Democratic Party

A black Virginia bishop is calling for Christians to leave the Democratic Party over what he describes as a "cult-like devotion" to abortion and what he terms as a "rejection" of the traditional family.

Bishop E.W. Jackson, a veteran of the Marine Corps and Harvard Law graduate, says the Democrats' enslavement of some Americans, most notably black Americans, is the modern day equivalent of slavery and his focus is to lead an exodus, similar to what Moses did in the Old Testament.

"Let God's people go," Jackson told The Christian Post in a telephone interview.

"Clearly, the Democratic Party is the anti-Christian Party in this nation. They reject the Bible, what Bible-believing Christians embrace and they encourage the growth of what we can a 'non-traditional' family. That is morally wrong and a disgrace to our nation and our Lord," said Jackson.

Jackson pointed to recent statements from liberals attacking Olympic gymnast Gabrielle Douglas, the 16-year-old sensation who won the all-around gold medal in gymnastics at the 2012 London summer Olympics.

After her historic victory, Douglas tweeted a verse from Romans 12:19: "Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.'"

Her tweet brought both applause and criticism, but it was the source of the criticism that was the source of irritation for Jackson.

"The accomplished young lady had the nerve to give glory to God for her win," Jackson said in a written statement. "This apparently offended liberals."

Mary Elizabeth Williams, journalist for the progressive online magazine salon.com, wrote, "I've often wondered what it is about Christians like Douglas that unnerves me so... Douglas and her ilk seem to espouse a faith based on what is commonly referred to as 'The God of Parking Spaces.'"

Jackson also pointed to the Democratic Party's support of organizations such as Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, Freedom From Religion Foundation and even the NAACP as examples of how far the party has moved away from Christians, and in particular black Christians.

"What was once an historic and honorable civil rights organization is now nothing other than a left wing apparatus of the Democratic Party," Jackson told CP. "I will say that some of the local chapters still advance civil rights, but in my opinion the national chapter no longer cares for the average a black person. That is a shame too."

A spokesperson for the NAACP declined to directly comment on Jackson's comments, only to say that as a 501(c)(3) they must operate in a non-partisan fashion and that they routinely work with elected officials on both sides of the aisle.

However, Colorado attorney David Kennedy – who wrote "You Voted for Who? And You Call Yourself a Christian?" – disagrees with Jackson and even says more Christians should align themselves with the Democratic Party.

"I find the Democratic Party policies more in line with Christian principles than with the Republican Party," Kennedy told The Christian Post. "You can pick your poison if you want to, but I find it odd that some Republican elected leaders require their staff to read the works of atheist authors such as Ayn Rand. Does that mean all Republicans should leave their party?"

Kennedy encourages Christians to read the Bible and compare what God says in Scripture with what each party actually does compared to what they say.
