Blue Meth in New Mexico: 'Breaking Bad' Imitators Lace Drugs With Chemicals

Blue meth in New Mexico has been spotted by federal agents, as drug dealers are using the "Breaking Bad"-like products to lure young, inexperienced customers. Though methamphetamine is bad enough itself, the blue version has been cut with chemicals and has been making people very sick.

The blue meth in New Mexico is the result of many different dealers attempting to distinguish and advertise their product. However, while Walter White of "Breaking Bad" made blue-tinted methamphetamine with a 99.1 percent purity, the real blue drug's purity decreases greatly because of the chemicals used.

"It's truly bad," Kevin Abar of Homeland Security told KOB-TV. "It's a bad meth that's created a lot of individuals getting sick from utilizing it."

Now it has spread across New Mexico, especially in Albuquerque, where the popular AMC drama took place.

"We are seeing an increase in blue meth up in the Four Corners, and into the Farmington region. It's actually being moved and pushed by various distributors," Abar continued.

While some hardcore meth users may know that the drugs are already shipped from Mexico at anywhere from 80 to 90 percent purity, teenagers and naïve fans of "Breaking Bad" may not know the difference.

"We're concerned that individuals may find it sexy and want to try it and utilize the drug and it's very addictive," Abar said.

This isn't the first time drug dealers have tried to take advantage of the Emmy-winning series' popularity. Blue meth was also spotted in 2010 in Kansas City, Mo. and in Oklahoma City in October 2013, according to KFOR news. In the latter case, officials managed to confiscate over 40 pounds of the dangerous, chemical-laced product.

Red methamphetamine has also been created as another way to advertise methamphetamine.

"Breaking Bad" finished its five-season run last year, and Bryan Cranston, who played the Walter White and his alias the infamous Heisenberg, won a Golden Globe Sunday for his final performance.

Some of the criminals dealing blue meth may not have seen the finale of the show- Walter White's methamphetamine empire comes crumbling down.
