Bristol Palin and 'The Situation' Talk Abstinence

Bristol Palin has teamed up with a "Dancing with the Stars" co-star to film a television commercial spotlighting abstinence and safe sex practices.

Bristol Palin and DWTS former co-star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino appear together in a public service announcement, released this week, discussing safe sex and abstinence.

The video is part of the Candie's Foundation's "Pause Before You Play" teen pregnancy prevention campaign.

In the video, the MTV "Jersey Shore" reality show star, known for hard abs and hookups, offers Bristol, the daughter of political maven Sarah Palin, "a situation with the official Situation."

"I know you're all about that abstinence thing, you know, c'mon, B. Palin, like you're not going to hook up like before your married?" asks The Situation.

The offer leads to a discussion about single motherhood, condoms and abstinence. Palin admits to being in a "situation" as a single mother to son Tripp Easton. However, she explains that she is "for real" about abstinence. Sorrentino recommends condom usage, but expresses "respect" for abstinence.

"It's an important cause and I am proud to be a part of it," Sorrentino said about his video appearance.

According to the Alan Gutmacher Institute, sexual activity is more common among older teens. Their studies also show that 750,000 young women aged 15 to 19 years become pregnant each year.

What's more, National Abstinence Education Association's Executive Director Valerie Huber says, ""The CDC reveals that one in 14 girls have at least one [sexually-transmitted disease]. At least one of the STDs that they are tracking can be contracted even with a condom on."

Conservative pro-family groups such as the NAEA praise abstinence as the only 100 percent-reliable way to prevent against pregnancy and STIs. Huber told The Christian Post that she believes teens are paying attention.

"This is a message that resonates with young people. Young people are listening," she commented.

Soon after becoming pregnant at 17 years old, Palin began advocating abstinence through the Candie's Foundation. In the two years since she joined the foundation's efforts, celebrities such as Ashley Tisdale, Beyonce, Usher and Ashlee Simpson have also posed for television and magazine ads.

Palin met Sorrentino, the latest Candie's Foundation advocate, on this season's DWTS. Sorrentino was voted off on October 13. Palin remains on the show as a final contestant.

The Candie's Foundation, a non-profit educating America's youth to make healthy decisions about sex, hopes the humorous and hip video will go "viral," and attract a wide audience. The video was posted on YouTube where it has already received over 356,000 views.
