Britney Spears' Auto-Tune-Free Warm Up Tape Leaks Online, Singer's Vocals Chastised

Britney Spears suffered an embarrassing blow this week when a tape of the singer warming up on her song "Alien" leaked online.

The pop singer has been accused of lip-syncing in the past, and after listening to the warm-up tape, which omits any use of auto-tune, Spears' critics have even more reason to doubt her vocal talent. On July 2, an unedited version of the track "Alien" off of Spears' most recent album Britney Jean made its way across the internet.

On the leaked tape, Spears reveals a pitchy, tone-deaf voice in what is believed to be simply a warm up vocal exercise. However, some listeners suggest that Spears heavily relies on auto-tune on all of her music, and that the tape is the actual song used on "Britney Jean," only lacking auto-tune. Many listeners have posted frustration over the voice on the leaked tape.

"Why are there artists who can't sing with millions of dollars when there are brilliant people who work very hard to sing very well with next-to-nothing in their wallet," one online reader wrote on Huffington Post.

Twitter user Emily added, "This leaked unedited #britneyspears song makes me feel a whole lot better about my own vocal capabilities."

Despite the backlash, track producer William Orbit released a statement defending Spears on Monday, July 7.

"I'd like to affirm that ANY singer when first at the mic at the start of a long session can make a multitude of vocalizations in order to get warmed up," he wrote on Facebook. "Warming up is essential if you're a pro, as it is with a runner doing stretches, and it takes a while to do it properly. I've heard all manner of sounds emitted during warm-ups. The point is that it is not supposed to be shared with millions of listeners."

Orbit said that some singer rely on herbal tea or work with sound engineers to reach the right level before recording a song.

"It's not expected to be a 'take,'" he added of the leaked recording for the song "Alien." '
