Bullied 11-Year-Old in Coma as Police and School Officials Investigate

A young boy in Pennsylvania is in a coma after fighting with two other students during school, bringing the subject of bullying back to the national stage.

Local reports indicate that Bailey O'Neill, 11, is currently in a medically induced coma resulting from the confrontation between him and two other students at Darby Township School in Delaware County, as reported by WPVI.

The coma was the result of O'Neill's condition deteriorating after the January fight which left the boy with a broken nose and concussion. As a result of the head trauma, O'Neill began to suffer seizures and was taken to A.I. DuPont Hospital, where doctors decided the best course of action was to put the boy in a coma.

The incident apparently involved two bullies and O'Neill's father said that one of the boys, whose identity has not been released due to their age, received a 2-day suspension from school, but that no other punishments have been levied.

"We have requested that the local police assist us in the investigation of this incident and are fully cooperating with their investigation of this incident. We are very concerned about the medical condition of this student," Stephen Butz, Southeast Delco School District Superintendent, said in a statement.

"And our thoughts and prayers are with him. Due to the age of the students involved and the ongoing police investigation, I am unable to make any additional comments," he added.

There has been no word as to whether additional charges with be brought against either of the perpetrators of this action as investigators continue their investigation.

"We are reviewing the bullying issue to determine if it did occur, or if it was a fight in the schoolyard," Jack Whelan, Delaware County District Attorney, said in a statement.

He added that they will be looking over medical records to see how the young boy's current medical condition came about, according to reports from The Delco Times.
