Carrie Underwood: 'I Get Hate Tweets' for 'The Sounds of Music' Role

Carrie Underwood is starring the upcoming television version of "The Sound of Music" but recently admitted that the undertaking has not been easy. The country music icon will star as Maria von Trapp in the live musical, the same role that made Julie Andrews famous back in 1956.

However, Underwood said that some fans of the original "Sound of Music" did not take kindly to the rebooted television starring herself.

"I get hate tweets and stuff like, 'You're not Julie Andrews,'" Underwood explained to Entertainment Weekly. "I know I'm not Julie. Nobody is and I would never pretend that I was. I know my place."

Despite some of the reactions on Twitter, producer Neil Meron said he could not be happier with Underwood in the role for the TV version of "The Sounds of Music."

"Carrie is one of the bravest artists we've ever worked with," he told the Associated Press, before noting that Underwood had arrived two weeks ahead of the production schedule with her lines fully memorized in order to get ahead.

Moreover, Underwood is not letting the online trolls deter her from the role of Maria- a character the singer happens to highly respect.

"She had this love for nature and this love for the things that God made, the beauty, the mountains, the music," she told Entertainment Weekly. "And I feel that."

As for Julie Andrews, the actress also voiced her reaction to Underwood reprising the role of Maria.

"Fifty years later, it's time somebody had another crack at it," she told Zap2it. "I had the best time of my life doing it, and it did wonderful things for me," said Andrews, now 78-years-old. "I think it's great that it's being done again, but doing it live must be so daunting ... I do hope it works for Carrie, because she's lovely and I'm a fan. I wish her well."

"The Sounds of Music" televised event will take place Dec. 5 on NBC at 8 p.m. EST.

The show will also star "True Blood" actor Stephen Moyer, who portrays Capt. Von Trapp, as well as Laura Benanti, Christian Borle and Audra McDonald.
