Fr. James Martin, who has developed a reputation as an outspoken LGBT activist within the Catholic Church, took to X on Dec. 18 to praise "Fiducia Supplicans" as "a major step forward in the church's ministry to LGBTQ people" that "recognizes the deep desire in many Catholic same-sex couples for God's presence in their loving relationships."

Noting that "the declaration opens the door to non-liturgical blessings for same-sex couples, something that had been previously off limits for bishops, priests, and deacons," Martin indicated that he "will now be delighted to bless my friends in same-sex unions."

Martin elaborated on his support for "Fiducia Supplicans" in a Dec. 18 article for the LGBT Catholic website Outreach, which he serves as editor of.

"It is the first time that a Vatican document treats same-sex couples with such pastoral care," he maintained. He expressed gratitude that the Vatican has given him the opportunity to share with same-sex couples "the graces that God desires for everyone," adding that he has "waited years to do" so.
