While it is still unclear what prompted the shooting, the suspect was immediately arrested and reprimanded by police following the horrifying incident.

A number of schools in the same area are still on lock down following initial reports that there may have been two suspects, although the superintendent of Chardon schools is confident that there was only one.

"My understanding is there was one gunman," Joseph Bergant told CNN.

Concerned parents quickly gathered outside of school administration building, in an attempt to obtain information about the well-being of their children and how to retrieve them.

"My daughter is at the school and she's texting me saying they're in a closet right now and they're OK," a parent speaking to CNN affiliate WKYC said.

While reports suggest that at least four students have been wounded, sources fear that this figure could be higher.

Chardon public High School has at least 1,150 enrolled students, and the small city of Chardon has approximately 5,100 residents.

Chardon is located approximately 30 miles east of Cleveland.
