Chevrolet Malibu 2016 Is Handed 'North American Car of the Year' Title

The Chevrolet Malibu 2016 has clinched the "North American Car of the Year" title after competing with 48 other contenders from all over the United States and Canada.

The "North American Car of the Year" award for the Chevrolet Malibu 2016 will be presented on Jan. 11, 2016 at the North American International Auto show. This title proves that the new Chevy has soared above its competitors including the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, and Toyota Camry, according to The Times Gazette.

Compared with its predecessor, the new Malibu is more attractive and has better tech features, plus the previous model's shortcomings have been noticeably addressed. General Motors (GM) took note of previous customer feedback and the designers and engineers used the input to create a better Chevrolet Malibu, Kelley Blue Book reports.

Customers previously complained about the Malibu 2013's lack of comfort and interior space, specifically in the rear seating. Now, GM has equipped the new car with more room in the front and in the back, plus other features such as MyLink with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, navigation, and WiFi tethering, the report details.

Although the Malibu 2016 is bigger than its predecessor, it is 300 pounds lighter because of the smaller-displacement engines. The L, LS, and 1LT variants are powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 160 horsepower and 6-speed automatic transmission. It is capable of getting 27 miles per gallon (mpg) in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway. The start/stop feature of the car results in better fuel economy, the report explains.

The 2LT and Premier trim levels are powered by a turbocharged 2-liter 4-cylinder gas engine that can put out 250 horsepower with 8-speed automatic transmission. It is apable of getting 22 mpg in city driving and 33 mpg on the highway.

The hybrid model of the new Malibu is powered by a 1.8-liter 4-cyliner engine with two electric motors and one 1.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which can put out a total of 182 horsepower. It is capable of getting 48 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway.

The Chevrolet Malibu 2016 has a whole suite of available safety features including 10 standard air bags, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist, City-Speed Front Automatic Braking, Forward Collision, and Teen Driver monitoring. The new Chevvy carries a price tag that starts from $22,500 to $31,795.
