Earlier this month, New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, a Democrat, and the council's Women's Caucus announced "the largest commitment of municipal funds" out of any United States city, allocating $1 million toward expanding abortion in New York City.

The funding is divided between the New York Abortion Access Fund, which purportedly provides financial support to women outside New York unable to pay the total cost of their abortion, and the Brigid Alliance, which offers lodging and other logistical support to women traveling to the state to obtain abortions.

In 2019, the council became the first city in the U.S. to provide funding for abortion by funding the New York Abortion Access Fund with $250,000.

In a statement, Adams described "access to abortion and reproductive health care" as "a fundamental human right that must be protected." She cited the additional $1 million in funding for abortion as an expansion of the "monumental NYC Abortion Rights Act."

"With the commitment of $1 million in City Council funding for abortion care, we are sending a clear message across the country that New York City will support anyone who is seeking the reproductive health care they need. This is what women's leadership looks like, and the Council remains focused on solutions that will strengthen our communities," she added.
