Courtney Love Fights Eviction: 'My Rent is Current!'

Courtney Love is striking back at claims that say she is behind on her rent, and is now preparing to fight her eviction.

Earlier this week it was reported that Love was being evicted after allegedly damaging her rented $8 million West Village apartment, and falling behind in her monthly payments.

Love, 47, denied any wrongdoing and insisted she is up to date, stating she simply repainted the apartment, not damaged it.

"I have not fallen behind on the rent. I have been paying month to month as agreed," Love told The New York Post. "My rent is current, but the owner is now asking for the remaining two months to be paid up front," she added.

Love, a mother of one, has retained Pryor Cashman LLP attorney Eric. D Sherman, who is maintains Love's innocence. Sherman slammed Donna Lyon, the building’s owner, and her attorney, Norman Flitt, for going public with their allegations, saying Lyon's claim "has no merit.”

"It’s unfortunate that Miss Lyon and her attorney chose to attack my client unfairly in the press, and we will deal with that accordingly," Sherman fumed. "What we won’t do is respond in a similarly inappropriate manner,” he added.

Lyon alleges that Love did not follow the correct procedures before painting the townhouse, which requires that tenants first seek permission. She argues that Love caused $100,000 worth of damages after recently redecorating the townhouse.

Lyon also says Love is behind in approximately $54,000 in rent payments, which equates to approximately two months’ rent.

The controversial rock singer is no stranger to legal woes.

In 1995, Love was charged with assaulting singer Kathleen Hanna and in the same year pled guilty to verbally assaulting an Australian flight attendant. In 2003, Love faced criminal charges for drug possession and earlier this year was forced to settle a lawsuit after she was accused of defamation.

Love was married to the late Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide in 1994. It is believed that Love continues to struggle with her late husband's death, and has allegedly battled substance abuse for years.

The troubled singer wants to stay in her Manhattan townhouse and proposed a solution to Lyon.

"Even though it is not required, I would happily pay that and another six months’ rent up front if she would extend the lease for six months," Love said.
