'Crazy Rich Asians' News, Release Date: First Look Features Henry Golding, Constance Wu

"Crazy Rich Asians," the upcoming movie adapted from Kevin Kwan's novel of the same name, is hitting U.S. cinemas next year.

Entertainment Weekly has released the first look at their cover featuring the film's stars, Henry Golding and Constance Wu. For those who are unaware, "Crazy Rich Asians" tells the story of Rachel (Wu) who travels to Singapore to meet her boyfriend Nick's (Golding) family. Unbeknownst to her, however, is the fact that Nick's family is extremely wealthy, being one of the richest families in Asia.

In a behind-the-scenes video posted by the publication, Golding and Wu discuss what the film is truly about and how any person from any background will be able to relate to the characters.

"The core of it is this love story and this bond that Rachel and Nick have," Golding previewed.

"It's such a fantastic world but it still deals with very human problems and relationships that people from any financial bracket have," Wu added.

Another first look photo taken from the movie shows Wu's Rachel holding hands with a woman who is lavishly dressed in gold from head to toe. Behind them are several luxury cars.

"Crazy Rich Asians" is quite unique in that it features an all-Asian cast, which is not a common thing in Hollywood. Issues of whitewashing have long plagued the entertainment industry, and Kwan has revealed that a producer once offered to make his novel into a movie provided that Rachel's character would be Caucasian.

"That was their strategy. They wanted to change the heroine into a white girl," the author told Entertainment Weekly. "I was like, 'Well, you've missed the point completely.' I said, 'No, thank you.'"

Thankfully, Kwan was then approached by the right producer, Nina Jacobson, who believed that casting Asians for Asian roles was very important.

"Crazy Rich Asians" will premiere on Aug. 17, 2018.
