Denver Broncos roster rumors: Gary Kubiak reportedly had a talk with Johnny Manziel

The Denver Broncos are indeed in desperation mode right now. With the crop of free agent quarterbacks already running out, head coach Gary Kubiak is turning to a, well, very familiar name: Johnny Manziel.

According to ESPN, citing multiple sources, the troubled former Cleveland Browns quarterback had a talk with the Broncos coach about the prospect of him playing for them. There are no specific details as to how the meeting went or if there really was a discussion of getting Manziel on board, but Kubiak's move of reaching out to someone who like him played quarterback for Texas A&M in college makes perfect sense, at least if one looks at it as a pressing need of Denver for player who has the talent to be a starter.

The same report said that the Broncos are only making a move once they have a clearer view on Manziel's legal issues and once the expected NFL disciplinary measures are handed out to him. And they're absolutely doing the right thing. The fact that they tried to talk to him about a job is in itself a risky move on their part, considering how Manziel has been behaving the past few months. So if the team is really serious in signing him, he should agree to submit himself to either counseling or clinical work.

The 23-year old Heisman Trophy winner in 2012 unraveled in a series of questionable behavior starting last year. The Browns eventually released him last March after two disappointing seasons where he saw himself deal with on-field and off-field issues.

For the Broncos, the search for a starting quarterback hasn't been that fun this offseason. After the retirement of Peyton Manning and the departure of Brock Osweiler, they've been openly pursuing San Francisco 49ers' Colin Kaepernick, but to no avail. This time, they just might get Manziel for the simple reason that no other team is even contemplating on doing the same.
