Denver Broncos Rumors 2016: How Should The Team Prepare for Next Season?
The Denver Broncos came out on top of everyone else when they won Super Bowl 50, but just like every other team in the NFL, they need to get back to business and focus on the next season, starting with free agency.
The offseason moves a team makes usually define the type of success they'll have come regular season, and while the Broncos are to be considered as one of the favorites to win the title next season, other teams will certainly make moves to contend.
Denver is in a quite unfamiliar territory heading into the offseason with a total of 16 unrestricted free agents, with each one of them hoping to either re-sign with the team or look for better opportunities outside. But if the Broncos want to make it back-to-back, they will have to look at improving several positions, including the starting quarterback issue and the depth in running back.
The only reason why the Broncos need to talk about the starting quarterback position is because of the uncertainty of Peyton Manning returning. Right after the Super Bowl, talks about him calling it quits started to surface and there's reason why the rumor suddenly popped up — because it might probably be true.
If Manning indeed retires, the heir to the throne is no other than Brock Osweiler; the only problem is he also is going to be an unrestricted free agent. He deserves a big payday, and the Broncos should be worried about that considering that a lot of teams in the league are more than willing to pay for a top-caliber quarterback like him. If they don't intend to pay him at least $12 million for 2016, then he's probably out.
The other thing the Broncos will need to improve on come next season is the depth at running back. C.J. Anderson is expected to lead the way after a fine performance in Super Bowl 50, but there's really no one else that can guarantee a night-in and night-out contribution, especially with Ronnie Hillman becoming an unrestricted free agent. They at least have the opportunity to get some help out of the draft or even in free agency.
The team just needs to keep the core intact to make another push next season. But it definitely is easier said than done with several of the key contributors for last season expected to test the free agent market, including Super Bowl MVP Von Miller, Osweiler, DE Malik Johnson, and leading tackler Danny Trevathan.
