'Doctor Who' Season 10 Cast News, Spoilers: Peter Capaldi Confirms 'Very Different' New Companion Cast For Next Season

Following months of speculation as to who will replace Jenna Coleman as the Doctor's companion in long-running British sci-fi series "Doctor Who," Peter Capaldi has now confirmed that the new companion has been chosen.

In an interview with Brazilian website Omelete (via NME), the Scottish actor/director spoke about "a new companion, along any minute" and said that he is "very excited" about the new casting.

Though Capaldi did not divulge the identity of his new co-star, he did admit that they have already been working on the new season. "Obviously I know who that is and we've been doing a bit of work together already and it's very exciting," the actor, who has played the BBC series' Twelfth Doctor since 2014, said.

"Because it's a very different sort of take on it," he added.

Speaking about what makes his character's new companion "different," Capaldi said: "Clara had prior knowledge of the Doctor. It was conceived as a human connected to your timeline, and so had access to the cosmic nature of the Doctor."

"Now we have someone who knows very little about the Doctor," he shared.

Previous Doctor's companions have been played by "Guardians of the Galaxy" actress Karen Gillan (as Amy Pond), "Penny Dreadful" star Billie Piper (as Rose Tyler), and, most recently, Coleman (as Clara Oswald).

Coleman left "Doctor Who" at the end of season 9 to star in ITV's new drama series, "Victoria."

Since Coleman's departure was announced, there has been much speculation about who will take over as the Doctor's assistant. "Game of Thrones" actress Maisie Williams, who guest starred in the show's ninth run, was one of the most talked-about potential replacements.

However, Williams has announced that she will no longer be returning to the series, telling BANG Showbiz (via Cinema Blend) in February, "I'm not going to be working on 'Doctor Who' again."

The tenth season of "Doctor Who" will debut in 2017. Before that, Capaldi will appear in the annual "Doctor Who" Christmas Special, which airs Christmas Day 2016.
