Does Justin Bieber need to say sorry for dissing on the late Prince? Rep says comment "fake"

Fans of the late Prince were outraged when Justin Bieber allegedly made a comment on social media regarding their idol which they saw as tasteless and insensitive. More recently though, representatives for Bieber have declared to various outlets that the post on the "Love Yourself" singer's Instagram account had been "fake" and that a screengrab of the quickly deleted comment which purportedly started from the well-known Twitter account Shady Music Facts, was "fabricated."

Through all this, Beiber has not made any comment through official channels regarding the death of the artist Prince. Here's how it all started.

The pop icon Prince had only recently died Thursday at the age of 57. Andrew Watt, guitarist for California Breed, was only one of several celebrities, both from within and without the music industry, who gave tribute to the music legend that gave the world hits as "Kiss," "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World," "Batdance" for 1989 Batman soundtrack, and "Purple Rain."

On Instagram, the musician posted a tribute to the "the purple one" saying, "… Today waking up to this news I am truly beside myself...devastated...the last of the greatest living performers...my guitar idol ..."

And to this post, Beiber was said to have commented saying, "Well not the last greatest living performer."

In a furious backlash against Beiber's seeming lack of tact and taste, countless Prince fans responded; one user wrote, "@justinbieber, you're such a disrespectful a---ole!!!" while another said, "You'll NEVER be a legend like Prince." Scores of like comments were directed at the 22-year-old singer, although there were also some who were on his side.

A user responded, "D--n, you don't even know if he was directing it towards himself or not. Give the kid a break."

Still another agreed with the comment Bieber allegedly posted.

"Not the right time to say this but @justinbieber is right!"

So it may look like the Canadian pop star has no need of saying he's sorry after all.
