Dr. Drew Explains Rihanna and Chris Brown 'Misinterpreting Love'

Rihanna and Chris Brown may have shocked many by exchanging a kiss at the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this month, but Dr. David Drew Pinksy recently revealed that it often takes domestic violence victims up to eight times to leave their abusers.

While singers Rihanna, 24, and Chris Brown, 23, overcame a domestic dispute in 2009 that resulted in the latter being on probation, Pinsky recently spoke up about the pair being seen in close proximity of each other several times since the incident.

"On average, it takes a woman in a domestic violence situation eight attempts at leaving before she leaves," Pinsky said during a recent stint on the Lance Bass SiriusXM radio show recently. "They go back – they misinterpret the intensity as love. They think it's so intense and great, 'He loves me so much, that's why he got so upset.' We haven't heard the end of this."

Pinsky, an internist and addiction medicine specialist who also serves as a radio and television personality, said Rihanna is a normal person for still wanting to surround herself with Brown despite their sorted past.

"Let's face it, she's attracted to that … Listen, I don't fault either person. I don't [say,] 'Oh, it's a bad person,'" Pinsky, also known as Dr. Drew said recently. "These are human experiences. These are very common situations these days."

Rihanna seemed to confirm the doctor's statements when she appeared in an interview with media maven Oprah Winfrey recently. In the interview, the Barbadian pop star admitted that she found it hard to let go of her relationship with Brown.

"I still love him," Rihanna told Winfrey in her interview last month. "We're very, very close friends. We built a trust again and that's it. We love each other and we probably always will."
