Emmy Award Winners 2011: Martin Scorsese Wins for 'Boardwalk Empire'

The Oscar award winning director Martin Scorsese emerged with one of the top prizes at this year’s Emmy Awards on Sunday. The leading director won the award for directing drama series the “Boardwalk Empire.”

The pilot episode, directed by Scorsese, is set in 1930s Prohibition-era Atlantic City at a time when mob bosses ruled.

The director of Hollywood legendary movies "GoodFellas" and "Raging Bull" enjoyed himself so much directing the pilot that he admitted he’d like to direct more.

"I've always dreamed of working on a project where the characters can develop over a period of time," Scorsese told reporters. "You can develop plot, characters ... and get more done over a longer period of time. It gives you more license and much more freedom."

Commenting on being at the Emmys Scorsese said, "I must say it is something I never dreamed of. It's a different medium, although we approach 'Boardwalk Empire' as a film, a very long film. It's just as exciting."

Other films directed by Scorsese include the No Direction Home; a documentary that revolves around the life of Bob Dylan and his contribution to the American popular music industry during the 20th century.

Scorsese encouraged other directors to make “something extraordinary now,” explaining that the resources and opportunities available now were that he had longed for way back in the 1960’s.

"You have the opportunity here now. You can do something really extraordinary now. This is the time," he said.
