Emmy Award Winners 2011: Ricky Gervais 'Banned' From Attending

Ricky Gervais was banned from the 2011 Emmy Awards gala and his pre-recorded speech was faux edited by producers and caused outbursts of laughter in the audience.

The comedian, who caused controversy during the January Golden Globes ceremony, was (as a joke) banned from Sunday’s gala. The controversial celebrity recorded a video which was shown live during the Emmys, in which he explains that he couldn’t have been there in person because he was not allowed to.

“Not after the Golden Globes,” Gervais said in the video. “In fact now, during any awards ceremony, I'm not even allowed on American soil.”

The video was fake-edited to cut out Gervais’ controversial comments and edit his speech in a humorous way.

"I hope I didn't say anything that you found offensive,” Gervais said in the video. “Though if I did, I don't care. You can suck my [edit] Twinkie. Thanks for listening. And finally, thanks to God for making me an [edit] absolute idiot. There I said it. Again."

The “editing” started after Gervais had apparently attempted to offend the producers.

“What a bunch of cowardly [edit] countrymen like Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan. We're proud of you. I've won a few Emmys myself. I've lost a few too. I was up for five last year and I lost them all to other shows that in my opinion were absolute [edit] 'Schindler's List' but then went on to do TV with 'Band of Brothers' and 'The Pacific' for HBO, which in my opinion is the greatest channel in the world [edit] apart from [edit] fox [edit] that is, [edit] obviously.”

The obvious edits caused outbursts of laughter in the audience.

During the Golden Globe ceremony back in January, which Gervais hosted, he told several controversial jokes that got him a lot of criticism from the Hollywood community.

“Welcome to the 68th annual Golden Globes Awards ceremony... It’s going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast,” he said, opening the gala.

He also poked fun at a movie starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, “The Tourist,” and ages of the “Sex and the City 2” cast, among other jokes.
