'Fireproof' Star Erin Bethea Talks New Movie, Offers Faithful Words of Advice to Graduates

Actress Erin Bethea has opened up about her latest role in the film "This Is Our Time" as well as offered her take on the dilemmas new graduates face today.

Well-known for her role opposite Kirk Cameron in 2008's hit film "Fireproof," Bethea realized she wanted to pursue an acting career at the age of 15.

"I was always a performer- singing, dancing, putting on shows in the living room," explained the actress while speaking to The Christian Post. "When I was 15 I got really into acting and my parents were really supportive."

Bethea noted that her father, a senior pastor at Sherwood Baptist Church, was not surprised by her decision to pursue acting, and that her mother imparted valuable advice.

"My mother had been talked out of becoming an artist and studied education instead, and always regretted it," said Bethea. "She told me, 'Make your living off of something you love doing. Become really good at it, and you will get paid for it.'"

Recounting her career decision actually helped Bethea get into character as Alé in the new film "This Is Our Time." The inspirational drama follows five high school friends who stayed connected through their faith as each sets out to make a difference in the world in God's name.

Summoning the courage to follow her passion through strength from God was something Bethea and her character had in common. However, the actress noted one difference: "I wish I was more like her," she told CP. "She's an amazing person- the one everyone wants to be around, happy, joyful, sees the good in everyone. Some people call it naïve, but I think for Ale, it's a choice."

As for young people who are at the crossroads of their lives where they are trying to find their passion and pick a career, Bethea quoted a poignant line from "This Is Our Time."

"When kids are wondering what to do and have so many questions- there's this line in the film that said it best: 'It's not what God wants me to do, it's who is God asking me to be,'" said the Georgia native. "It's important to be obedient and trusting of God, then he will show you his plan."

Moreover, the actress affirmed her faith in God's plan for people.

"He gives each person specific gifts, desires, and passions for a reason- you have to know and trust that, and you will be successful," Bethea told CP.

"This Is Our Time" has received the Dove Foundation's Family Seal of Approval and it recommended for all ages. The film was released to DVD last week, and is available on through Pure Flix Entertainment. Watch the trailer here
