4 times Democrats denied election results

2. The 2004 presidential election

Four years later, Democrats raised questions about the electoral votes in Ohio, which President George W. Bush carried in his reelection bid. Had he not carried Ohio, he would have failed to accumulate the 270 electoral votes necessary to secure the election. The late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, D-Ohio, joined with then-Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif, to object to the certification of the electoral votes in the state, forcing Congress to engage in a debate.

Of the 31 members of Congress who voted to object to the certification of the election, 10 remain in office today: Reps. James Clyburn, D-S.C., Danny Davis, D-Ill., Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, Barbara Lee, D-Calif., Frank Pallone, D-N.J., Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and Maxine Waters, D-Calif.

All but Johnson are seeking re-election in 2022. Then-Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., who also objected to the certification of electoral votes in Ohio, now serves in the U.S. Senate.
