The Verizon Galaxy Nexus actually runs on Android 4.0.3, making its Ice Cream Sandwich software the most advanced yet. Other carriers will need to catch up at this update only brings other carriers to 4.0.2.

Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich debuted on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone in Nov. when it was released overseas and in the U.S. at the end of Dec. when it launched as an exclusive on Verizon.

Other devices are expected to receive the Android 4.0 sometime in the beginning of this year including the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the Samsung Galaxy note along with other tablet devices.

Ice Cream Sandwich is an impressive version of the Android branded software featuring some interesting additions that are not available on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread.

Some of these features include Android Beam that allows owners of the Galaxy Nexus to transfer data using NFC by simply touching their smartphones together back-to-back. It also updates the contacts act renaming it "people” allowing the user to categorize its contacts in various categories such as best friends, co-workers and family.

One of the most interesting additions to Ice Cream Sandwich is the facial recognition feature. This allows users to unlock their phones by simply scanning their face with its camera.
