Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update Begins Rolling Out

The Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2, KitKat update began rolling out earlier this week for users overseas.

This new software brings minor UI changes included the use of KitKat style white status bar icons instead of the mult-colour icons found on past Samsung devices. The smartphone also received a performance boost and an increase in benchmark scores, according to a Sam Mobile report.

The lock-screen now features a camera shortcut that takes users directly to the point-and-shooter. Album art also now shows up on the entire screen when music is played.

The update is being rolled out in phases so different countries will receive it at, according to Samsung's roll out schedule. It is currently available in Russia and can be installed with Samsung KIES or OTA over the air.

The Android 4.4 KitKat update will roll out to most of Samsung's high-end devices in the near future.

The company released a list of those that will upgrade via press release earlier this week that included the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy S4 Zoom, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Mega, Galaxy Light, Galaxy Note 8.0, Galaxy Tab 3, Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition.

Samsung also detailed the changes the update will bring to all of these devices.

"The upgrade provides a number of innovative, easy-to-use features that enhance the user experience, including a more intuitive user interface, enhanced messaging capabilities and updated applications," wrote the company.

These features include a new location menu that allows users to easily activate GPS, wi-fi and mobile networks while simultaneously checking the battery usage of apps running location and service capabilities.

Enhanced Messaging will give users the ability to choose between Messages or Hangouts as their preferred default messaging application and select from a larger assortment of updated Emoji icons.

Google Mobile Service will be updated to allow users to automatically back up photos and video and can open, view, rename and share Google Docs and files.
