'Game of Thrones' Season 6 News, Spoilers: New Season 'Resets the Chess Board'; Melisandre 'Completely Confused'

When HBO's hit fantasy drama series "Game of Thrones" returns later this month, fans will find new alliances and new conflicts re-arranging the political situation in the fictional world of Westeros.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, "Game of Thrones" star Liam Cunningham, who plays the smuggler-turned-knight Davos Seaworth, said that while the previous season featured "worlds colliding," the hotly anticipated sixth season of the HBO series will feel like a completely different show from what "Game of Thrones" fans know.

"This season's cool because it resets the chess board and people get partnered with new people," the actor said. "There are new plans – and they're enormous plans. There are new loyalties. There are new tensions. There are tensions between people where there were not tensions before."

Cunningham also spoke about what fans can expect from his character, hinting that Davos should soon find out about how his good friend Shireen (Kerry Ingram) died in season 5. "There's now a big expectation about him finding out," the actor told EW. "I think Davos absolutely needs to find out what happened."

Meanwhile, actress Carice van Houten, who plays Melisandre, hinted at what's ahead for her character, telling EW that viewers will see a different side of the Red Priestess in season 6.

"We see somebody whose whole belief system is tumbling down," van Houten said. "She's completely confused, and I really like to play that. After all the security and strength and pride, now we see something completely different."

According to the actress, the change in her character's arc is something she has been waiting for. Though the Red Priestess is one of the least liked characters in "Game of Thrones," van Houten told EW that many viewers have said that they could forgive Melisandre's earlier trespasses if she resurrects Jon Snow (Kit Harington) in season 6.

The new season of "Game of Thrones" kicks off with the episode titled "The Red Woman" on Sunday, April 24, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
