'Game of Thrones' Season 5 HBO Premiere Date set for April 12

HBO's fantasy drama series "Game of Thrones" has been confirmed to return to television screens with its fifth season with 10 brand new episodes starting April 12.

The critically-acclaimed television series is based on the best-selling book series written by George R.R. Martin. It's fourth season was shown last year from April to June and fans have been clamoring for the next season to come soon. HBO has now given a concrete date for fans to mark on their calendars.

The return date was officially announced at the Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday, which will be followed by the debut of two other HBO shows "Silicon Valley" and "Veep," also with 10 episodes each.

The date was confirmed following a previous announcement that "Game of Thrones" will be shown in around 150 IMAX theaters. HBO will be screening the last two episodes of season four, as well as an exclusive trailer for the fifth season. It will run from Jan. 23 to 29 and will go on sale soon.

For those who are anticipating the show's return though, they may be interested to note that the life of Cersei Lannister, played by Lena Headey, will be fleshed out more.

Reports have it that Cersei and her childhood encounter with Maggy the Frog will possibly be shown through flashbacks, especially after reports appeared of "The Revolting World of Stanley Brown" actress Nell Williams being cast to play her younger self.

Kit Harrington, who plays Jon Snow, also talked to Radio Times about the fifth season, calling it phenomenal.

"They've seriously overreached themselves. They've built it the right way," he said. "It could have got a lot sillier a lot earlier and it hasn't. it's progressed in the right way story-wise. It's so brilliant this year."

"Game of Thrones" will return to television screens on April 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
