'Grey's Anatomy' Season 11 Spoilers: Meredith and Derek Break Up In New Season?

"Grey's Anatomy" season 11 is already highly anticipated by fans as rumors surrounding beloved characters Meredith and Derek swirl this week.

As previously reported, Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) and Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd) have signed contracts assuring viewers that their characters will stay on for at least two more years. However, little is known about the fate of the relationship between the characters in the months to come.

During the season 10 finale, the married doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial had a big fight, and "Grey's" fans are hoping that their anger does not carry over into season 11. Although fans will have to wait until season 11 premieres in the fall to know for sure, spoilers about the new season have already surfaced online this week. Insiders at the ABC drama discussed rumors that suggested Meredith and Derek were heading for a breakup.

"A Mer-Der break-up seems unlikely, but there has been unconfirmed buzz that the duo are about to face one of their more challenging seasons in recent memory, which makes the timing of Cristina's exit horrible for Mer," TVLine reported.

Sandra Oh, who portrayed Cristina, first announced her departure from the series at the beginning of season 10, but fans finally learned how creator Shonda Rhimes would write off the character during the season finale last month. Cristina is heading to Switzerland to oversee a medical research facility. However, it remains to be seen how the doctors at Grey Sloan cope with the change as well as the loss of one of the hospital's finest surgeons.

While many details are unknown, previous reports revealed that other actors returning for season 11 include Justin Chambers, Sara Remirez, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. The actors, who portray Alex Karev, Dr. Callie Torres, Dr. Miranda Bailey and Richard Webber, respectively, inked new deals with ABC for season 11 earlier this year. Also, season 10 was divided into two parts, but it remains to be seen if season 11 will follow suit. "Grey's" is expected to return on ABC sometime this fall.
