Ed Winter, assistant chief of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office, is reported to have told the Daily News that Dwight Arrington Meyers, aka Heavy D, “had gone to the doctor the day before and had what appeared to be flu-like symptoms.”

The rapper, who died on Tuesday, is reported to have just returned home after shopping when he experienced breathing difficulty, while attempting to ascend a stairway.  Adam Mills, an associate of the rapper, discovered a distressed Myers leaning against a railing in distress. Mills reportedly cradled the weakened rapper and alerted others to call 911.

The Los Angeles Police Department issued a statement regarding the rappers death:

“Upon arrival, officers discovered a male, 44 years old, conscious, communicative, but having difficulty breathing. Beverly Hills Fire Department paramedics arrived on scene and transported the subject to near-by Cedars Sinai Medical Center. The individual ultimately died at the hospital. The identity of the individual was later confirmed as Dwight Arrington Meyers, also known as ‘Heavy D’.”

Heavy D will be laid to rest in New York next Friday following a public viewing and wake at a Mount Vernon Church the day before, a church official said.
