Herman Cain 'Reassessing' Candidacy

If Herman Cain had a Facebook page, his status would be: “Herman Cain is Reassessing His Candidacy.”

The National Review Online transcribed a phone call from Herman Cain to his staff in which he discussed his current position in the race. He is dealing with the fall-out from this week’s news of an allegation made by Ginger White of a 13-year affair, a businesswoman from Georgia.

Cain told the staff of the strain White’s allegation had put on his family. “It’s taken an emotional toll. It’s also taken a toll on my wife and family, as you would imagine.”

He remained firm, though, that he had not had an affair and was innocent when it came to the other charges of sexual harassment.

Cain did not specifically talk about dropping out of the primary race but questioned whether people would be able to continue supporting him in light of this latest allegation.

This is unfamiliar territory for Cain supporters who have seen Cain only become stronger in the grip of adversity. Previously, Cain’s supporters have rallied around him and contributed to his campaign. They have not done so this time.

Cain acknowledged that in the phone call: “That’s why we’re going to give it time, to see what type of response we get from our supporters.”

It will be interesting to see if the “Cain Train” can get back on track or if it has been permanently derailed.
