When the female student responded by pointing to the unborn's immature state, Hawkins warned about a "slippery slope" when attempting to define life based on one's capabilities. The pro-choice student had argued that the unborn are not sentient, which made aborting them morally acceptable.

Hawkins told the student about the pro-choice philosopher Peter Singer, who advocates not only for abortion but for infanticide. She pointed out that many pro-choice people do not agree with Singer, and while his views are immoral to most people, Hawkins claimed that the philosopher's stance is the only "logical progression" of the pro-choice position.

The girl eventually ended the conversation by thanking Hawkins for talking with her before heading off to class.
