Severed Human Head Found in Hollywood

A human head was discovered by hikers in the Hollywood Hills on Tuesday.

Two unidentified women found the decapitated head while walking along Bronson Canyon Park near the 3200 block of Canyon Drive.

The hikers who are also dog walkers went on a hike on the popular trail located under the Hollywood sign. The head was found just off the trail in a plastic bag. Two of their nine dogs had been playing with the bag when they decided to see what was inside.

When the women- who will remain unidentified until further investigations of the case- realized the contents of the bag, they notified park rangers, who immediately contacted law enforcement officials.

“Two of the dogs began to play with the bag and what appeared to be an object. While the dogs were playing with it, at some point the object came out of the bag and they discovered that it was a head- a severed head,” Sgt. Mitzi Fierro of the Los Angeles Police Department told KCAL-TV.

Police do not believe the severed head had been on the trail for long, as there were no bite marks on it and no signs of decomposition.

The Los Angeles Times reports the victim is believed to be a man in his 40s of Armenian descent with salt and pepper hair.

Fierro also said investigators are trying to make a sketch of the victim in an attempt to identify him and the coroner's office will try to identify the victim through the use of his dental records.

According to MSNBC.com, the head was discovered around 3:45 p.m. Police had no luck when they used cadaver dogs while searching for any more possible body parts. They stopped at sundown and ended any further investigation until daylight.

The scene was guarded Tuesday night and the investigation will continue Wednesday.
