Updates could take from several weeks to several months.

Ice Cream Sandwich has introduced a number of new specs to Android, including powering both tablets and smartphones, a new custom typeface called Robato, a completely touch screen UI, a lock screen featuring Face Unlock, and Android Beam, an NFC technology that allows users to share information by touching their phones together.

Commentators suggest that due to the NFC, near field communication technology that powers mechanisms like the phone-to-phone sharing utility, Android Beam, a direct download update of Ice Cream Sandwich from Gingerbread was not possible.
